Blackwood & Mahogany is a commission studio in the Cascade foothills. We build a small number of hardwood pieces each year for residential clients — tables, casework, and built-ins — specified to one room and one household.

We are not a store and we keep no inventory. Each piece is numbered, then retired. The next client does not get the same work with a different stain.

3D Visualization
We produce detailed renderings showing grain patterns, proportions, marquetry placement, and lighting effects for your specific room and chosen materials. You approve every detail before construction begins. Revisions at this stage are included.
Material Selection
Premium hardwood boards are hand-selected for grain consistency, figure, and character. Clients may approve boards in person or via photography before cutting begins. The 50% deposit is due when the commission agreement is signed.
Construction
3–6 months of traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, hand-cut dovetail drawer construction, precision manufacturing, and hand tool finishing. Progress photography is shared at key milestones. No shortcuts are taken at any stage.
Finishing
Hand-rubbed penetrating oil finish applied in multiple coats, sanded between each. Hardware installed. Integrated LED lighting commissioned and tested. Final quality inspection — every drawer, door, joint, and surface examined before leaving the studio.

Premium Hardwoods

Primary species: American black walnut, genuine mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), white oak, cherry, hard maple, figured maple (curly, quilted, birdseye).

Accent and inlay species: African blackwood, padauk, purpleheart, holly — used in marquetry panels and geometric inlay details for contrast and visual depth.

All wood is sourced from FSC-certified mills or reclaimed and salvage sources. Each board is hand-selected for grain consistency, figure, and character — chosen for species that age gracefully and become more beautiful over decades of use.

Joinery

Mortise-and-tenon is used at every major structural joint — rails to legs, case sides to tops, stretchers to bases. Joints are hand-fitted to a friction-tight connection before glue-up. Dovetail joints are hand-cut on all drawer boxes: the interlocking geometry resists racking under load without mechanical fasteners. No pocket screws, no staples, no shortcuts hidden behind paint.

Hand-Rubbed Oil Finishing

Penetrating oil finishes — Danish oil, hard wax oil, or tung oil — are applied in thin coats, sanded between each application. The oil penetrates and cures within the wood fiber rather than forming a surface film. The wood remains tactile: you feel the grain, not a coating. Unlike polyurethane, oil finishes are fully renewable — the owner re-oils every 2–3 years using the same oil, restoring depth and protection without professional help.

Marquetry & Inlay
